Another type of cemented carbide tool material (cermet) for high speed (>300400m min1) finish machining (low feed) of steels is based on TiC in a NiMo binder. Further advancements of this cermet are based on the following four concepts: (i) Improvements through the additions of other carbides, such as MoC, TaC, and WC, (ii) significant additions of TiN to TiC either as separate phases or as titanium carbonitride (TiCN) resulting in TiCTiN cermets, (iii) modification of the composition of the cermet by adding Al to the NiMo binder alloy which would precipitate fine intermetallic compound Ni3Al particles in the binder phase for improving the hot strength (similar to the strengthening effect found in nickel base superalloys), and (iv) a coating of TiN preferably by PVD on the cermet tools. With these additions the hot hardness, transverse rupture strength (TRS), oxidation resistance, and thermal conductivity can be significantly increased. The higher TRS provides better edge strength and chipping resistance while higher thermal conductivity provides thermal shock resistance both of which have limited the application of this material for a long time. Cemented TiC in a NiMo binder is used for selective higher speed (350500m min1) finishing of steels and malleable cast iron. Figure 3 shows a fractograph of a TiC in a NiMo binder cermet showing essentially the brittle nature of this material
