The iron oxide crystal grains in most iron ores are not evenly distributed in size. Spiral separators can therefore be used to take out the coarser iron oxide grains in the primary grinding circuit to save grinding energy and help achieve a higher iron recovery. The first step of physical beneficiation is crushing and grinding the iron ore to its liberation size, the maximum size where individual particles of gangue are separated from the iron minerals. A flow sheet of a typical iron ore crushing and grinding circuit is shown in Figure 1.2.2 (based on Ref. [4]). This type of flow sheet is usually followed when the crude ore contains below 30% iron. The number of steps involved in crushing and grinding depends on various factors such as the hardness of the ore and the level of impurities present [5]

It was shown that the formation of manganese carbonates occurs inside the sediment at the stages of diagenesis and (or) catagenesis as a result either of the redistribution of manganese embedded in the sediment itself, or of the supply of new portions of manganese into the medium of already lithified sediment at the stage of late diagenesis (synonymous with catagenesis, epigenesis). Specifically sedimentary carbonates of manganesethat is, those that were precipitated directly from the mass of a marine water bodyhave not been documented. A general regularity of the formation of manganese carbonates under conditions of early diagenesis is the necessary participation in this process by microbially oxidized carbon of organic matter, and for manganese carbonates of post-early-diagenetic stages (phases) of lithogenesis by isotopically light carbon dioxide, formed with the metamorphism (destruction) of organic matter under conditions of burial of the sedimentary mass to significant depths (including during various stages of oil and gas generation). Buried oxidized organic matter during post-sedimentational stages of transformation of the sediment enables the concentration of manganese up to ore contentsby sedimentary-diagenetic (early diagenesis), and during subsequent stages of lithification of the initial sediment and transformation of sedimentary or volcanogenic-sedimentary rocklate diagenesis (diagenesis of deep burial, catagenesis, epigenesis). The concentration of manganese approaching the commercial scale of deposits occurs primarily under exogenous conditionson the borders of separation of the atmosphererocks (zone of hypergenesis). One of the characteristic particularities of the examined examples of manganese carbonates is that they all without exception are characterized by a lighter isotopic composition of carbon by comparison with that of sedimentary marine carbonates. Values of 13C for these decline to isotope ratios close (or in some cases even analogous) to those of carbon of organic matter. In ores of many deposits there is the notable inverse correlation between the ratios of the isotopic composition of carbon and the content of manganese: the higher the content of manganese in a sample, the lower the values of 13C and consequently the greater quantity of rocks rich in light isotope of carbon 12C, and vice versa
